How Far in Advance to Book a Birthday Dinner in NYC

The cheat sheetHow far in advance to book a birthday dinner in NYC: the 14 to 30 day windows, party-size cutoffs and walk-in rules eight restaurants publish, with exact dates.

How far in advance to book a birthday dinner in NYC depends on the restaurant: Rezdôra and Torrisi release tables 30 days ahead, Gramercy Tavern 28 days ahead at noon, and L’Artusi two weeks ahead at 9 AM. For a Saturday, December 12 dinner, that means alarms on November 12, 14 and 28, and online booking stops at four guests at Rezdôra and six at Torrisi. Hours, prices and policies below come from each restaurant’s own website, checked in October 2026.

Which NYC restaurants publish how far ahead you can book?

Four of the eight restaurants below state a rolling window, from 14 to 30 days. The other four publish a calling hour, a party-size trigger or a walk-in policy instead. Details are as of October 2026.

Restaurant Address Best for Published booking rule
Rezdôra 27 East 20th Street Up to 4 guests booked online 30 days ahead at 12:00 AM EST; 5 guests contact the restaurant; 6+ use the private dining form
Torrisi 275 Mulberry Street Up to 6 guests 30 days ahead on Resy; Bar Counter takes walk-ins
Gramercy Tavern 42 East 20th Street Tavern bar walk-ins; private room for 20 28 days ahead, new dates at noon; phone 12pm to 9pm daily
L’Artusi 228 West 10th Street Planners who can set a 9 AM alarm Two-week rolling window on Resy; bar and counter walk-ins
John’s of 12th Street 302 East 12th Street Phone bookers; parties of 20+ Reservations by calling after 3PM; party or event minimum of 20 people
Tarallucci e Vino 15 East 18th Street Groups of 6 to 8+ Card on file at 6+; prix fixe menu at 8+
Via Carota 51 Grove Street A walk-in birthday of eight or fewer No reservations; “Walk-ins always welcome”; private dining for 12-14 by email inquiry
Altro Paradiso 234 Spring Street 7 to 14 guests Large-party form for 7 to 14 guests

Torrisi gives “30 days in advance” but no release time. Tarallucci e Vino and Altro Paradiso state no window on the pages checked, and John’s of 12th Street states a calling hour, not a window. Via Carota has no window to count back from: asked about a special-occasion reservation, its Questions page answers “We do not offer reservations at this time.” For the others, a missing window is a reason to call, not a sign that tables stay open.

Why these eight: each publishes at least one booking rule on its own site, whether a window, a party-size cutoff or a walk-in policy. Booking apps and review sites were not used as sources. For rooms matched to headcount, the party-size guide to birthday dinners in NYC pairs capacities with booking windows.

What date does booking open for a Saturday, December 12 birthday?

The method is plain subtraction: count back from the dinner date by each restaurant’s stated number of days. A restaurant’s system may count differently, so treat each date as the earliest to check.

  • Rezdôra: Thursday, November 12, at 12:00 AM EST, the first minute of that day (30 days). Its FAQ page names DoorDash as the booking route.
  • Torrisi: Thursday, November 12 (30 days), on Resy. No release time is published.
  • Gramercy Tavern: Saturday, November 14, at noon (28 days).
  • L’Artusi: Saturday, November 28, at 9 AM (two weeks), on Resy.

Twenty-eight and fourteen days are whole weeks, so Gramercy Tavern and L’Artusi open a Saturday table on a Saturday. Thirty days is four weeks and two days, so Rezdôra and Torrisi open a Saturday table on a Thursday.

The same count works for a birthday that is close. As of October 22, 2026, tables for Saturday, November 7 opened on Thursday, October 8 at Rezdôra and Torrisi and on Saturday, October 10 at Gramercy Tavern; at L’Artusi they open on Saturday, October 24, at 9 AM. A birthday in holiday week has its own constraints; December birthday dinners in NYC covers that stretch.

What changes when the birthday party has five or more people?

Party size can matter as much as the calendar. The published cutoffs, in order:

  • 5 guests: Rezdôra’s FAQ says DoorDash bookings cover up to 4 guests; for 5, contact the restaurant.
  • 6 guests: Torrisi’s dining-room window is for parties of up to 6. Rezdôra sends 6 or more to its private dining form. Tarallucci e Vino asks for a card on file from 6 guests and applies $35 per person to a no-show, a cancellation inside 24 hours or a same-day cut of three or more guests.
  • 7 to 14 guests: Altro Paradiso’s site points to a large-party booking form. A Mattos Hospitality events page covering Altro describes the same product as 7 to 20 guests seated, so confirm the upper limit.
  • 8 or more: Tarallucci e Vino requires a prix fixe menu.
  • 10 guests: L’Artusi hosts parties of 10 to 90 in its wine room, mezzanine or full restaurant, and Torrisi’s Chef’s Table seats groups of up to 10.
  • 12 to 14 guests: Via Carota’s Farm Table is a private room with its own Grove Street entrance. The regular dining room takes no reservations, so a group this size goes through the events inquiry.

Rezdôra adds one rule that shapes a group: a table that orders the tasting menu must all take it, according to both its menu page and its “Do you have a tasting menu?” FAQ. The two pages disagree on price. The menu page lists the regional pasta tasting at $110 and asks guests to allow 2 hours; the FAQ says $98 per guest, dinner service only. Both list the optional wine pairing at $90. Confirm the tasting price when booking.

When do private dining dates for a birthday open up?

None of the private-room pages checked states a rolling window; two publish lists of open dates instead. As of October 2026, Gramercy Tavern’s private dining page shows limited dinner dates for October, November and December and sends lunches and later dinners to an inquiry. Rezdôra’s private events page lists dinner dates for the same three months. The lists change, so read the page on the day you inquire.

Gramercy Tavern answers private-room inquiries first come, first served and confirms nothing without a valid credit card and a signed contract. Its Private Dining Room seats up to 20 guests. Torrisi’s Private Dining Room seats up to 30, and John’s of 12th Street’s back room hosts 70 guests, booked by phone with a minimum of 20 people. Via Carota takes event inquiries by email at gatherings@viacarota.com.

Can you book a birthday dinner the same day?

Sometimes, mostly at the bar or counter. Five of the eight publish a walk-in line:

  • At Gramercy Tavern, the bar in The Tavern is available for walk-ins at all times, and The Tavern lists 11:30 AM to 11:00 PM daily.
  • L’Artusi keeps “a selection of walk-ins” at its bar and counter, first come, first served.
  • Torrisi takes walk-ins at its Bar Counter, first come, first served.
  • Rezdôra’s bar is first come, first served for the full dining experience.
  • Via Carota says walk-ins are always welcome, lists an 11pm close every day and, on its Questions page, takes names for the waitlist in person only.

Only Via Carota’s Questions page puts a number on walk-in seating: its largest table seats 12, and it recommends a party of eight or fewer. For the other four, a group of five or more should ask before heading over.

By phone, Gramercy Tavern takes calls from 12pm to 9pm daily, and John’s of 12th Street takes reservations by calling after 3PM; the restaurant is open 4-10PM Sunday through Wednesday and 4-10:30PM Thursday through Saturday. More Manhattan options are in Italian in Manhattan without a reservation. Cake is the other short-notice question; what restaurants publish about cake policies covers it.
