Birthday Dinner NYC: Where to Book It, by Party Size

The cheat sheetBirthday dinner NYC planning by party size: eight restaurants, from a lasagna for two to private rooms for 28, 40 and 300, with booking windows checked.

For a birthday dinner in NYC, pick the restaurant by headcount first: for two, Don Angie in the West Village serves Our Lasagna for Two at $72; for up to ten, Union Square Cafe’s semi-private Alcove seats 10; and for a bigger party, Il Cantinori’s Wine Room holds up to 28, Union Square Cafe’s Park & Irving Room up to 40 seated, and Eataly NYC Flatiron hosts anything from a dinner for 12 to a gala for 300. Then book on the restaurant’s clock: Gramercy Tavern releases tables 28 days ahead at noon, Isabelle’s Osteria opens its book 30 days ahead for parties of up to 10, and Tarallucci e Vino requires a prix fixe menu for parties of 8 or more. Hours, prices, capacities and policies below were read from each restaurant’s own site in October 2026.

Most of the eight restaurants here sit within a short walk of Union Square, Gramercy and Flatiron, which keeps directions simple for a group arriving from different places. What decides the night is logistics: whether the room takes your party size online, what happens to the menu past a threshold, and how far ahead dates open.

Where to book a birthday dinner for two in NYC

Don Angie, at 103 Greenwich Avenue, is the clearest case of a kitchen that cooks for a pair. The menu lists Our Lasagna for Two at $72, with Italian sausage bolognese and whipped robiolina, and a Whole Roasted Lobster for Two at $135. The restaurant opens at 5pm Monday through Thursday and 4pm Friday through Sunday, with the bar opening half an hour earlier, and the site publishes a last seating of 10:30pm nightly. Booking runs through OpenTable; phone (212) 889-8884.

Gramercy Tavern, at 42 East 20th Street, is the answer when the birthday is spontaneous. Its reservations page states that the bar is available for walk-ins at all times. For a booked table in the Tavern, where the cooking comes off an open wood-burning grill and is served à la carte, or in the more formal Dining Room, reservations open 28 days in advance with new dates released at noon. Phone reservations run 12pm to 9pm daily on 212-477-0777.

Where to book a birthday dinner for six to ten people

Isabelle’s Osteria, at 245 Park Avenue South between 19th and 20th Streets, takes dining-room reservations 30 days in advance for parties of up to 10, on OpenTable and Resy only. Past ten, the booking moves to a private-events inquiry on (212) 388-1145.

Union Square Cafe, at 101 East 19th Street, publishes the Alcove: a semi-private space for up to 10 guests seated, overlooking the main dining room. It is the right shape for a birthday that wants some separation without a full private room. The restaurant opens at 11:30am on weekdays and 11am on weekends, serving lunch, aperitivo hour, dinner and weekend brunch; phone (212) 243-4020.

Friend of a Farmer, at 77 Irving Place, states it plainly: for groups of 5 to 12 guests, call the restaurant to book (212-477-2188). It does not take weekend brunch reservations at this location, so a weekday daytime birthday is the better fit.

Tarallucci e Vino, at 15 East 18th Street, is open all day — 8am to 10:30pm Monday through Thursday, 8am to 11pm Friday, 9am to 11pm Saturday and 11am to 10:30pm Sunday — which helps a group that cannot agree on an hour. Two published rules matter for a birthday: parties of 8 or more must order from a prix fixe menu, and parties of 6 or more need a credit card on file, with a $35-per-person fee for a no-show, a cancellation less than 24 hours ahead, or a same-day drop of three or more guests. Phone (212) 228-5400.

Birthday dinner for a large group in NYC: 12 to 40 guests

Past a dozen, you are booking a room rather than a table. Four restaurants near Union Square publish what their rooms hold.

Il Cantinori, at 32 East 10th Street between University Place and Broadway, has a Wine Room for up to 28 people, which the restaurant describes as an intimate private setting overlooking its wine cellar. Dinner runs from 5pm, until 10pm Sunday through Thursday and 10:30pm Friday and Saturday; phone 212-673-6044.

Tarallucci e Vino’s Mezzanine, at the same East 18th Street address, seats 10 to 38 or holds 20 to 65 standing. Private events go through (917) 782-7377.

Gramercy Tavern’s Private Dining Room seats up to 20 guests for lunch and dinner daily. The restaurant asks for a valid credit card and a signed contract to hold the room.

Union Square Cafe’s Park & Irving Room seats up to 40 or holds 45 standing, with access to the adjacent Parlor Bar.

For the questions to settle once you are past ten — set-menu thresholds, cake fees, service charges — booking a large group birthday dinner near Union Square works through them room by room.

Where to have a very large birthday party in NYC

Above 40, the options narrow to semi-private rooms and buyouts. Il Cantinori’s Skylight Room, at the back of the restaurant, is semi-private and holds up to 65, so ask how it is separated from the main room. Gramercy Tavern’s full buyout seats 120 with space for cocktails, and Union Square Cafe’s full buyout takes up to 100 seated or 200 standing.

Eataly NYC Flatiron, at 200 Fifth Avenue, is the most flexible when the guest list keeps moving. Its private-dining page describes hosting “an intimate dinner for 12 or a gala for 300”, across venues including Amalfi Rooftop by Birreria, Bar Milano, La Pizza & La Pasta and La Piazza. The building is open daily, 7am to 11pm.

How far ahead to book a birthday dinner in NYC

The published booking windows give you a date to set a reminder for:

  • Gramercy Tavern: 28 days ahead, with new dates released at noon. A Saturday birthday becomes bookable at noon four Saturdays earlier.
  • Isabelle’s Osteria: 30 days ahead, for parties of up to 10.
  • Private rooms: no published window. As of October 2026, Gramercy Tavern’s private dining page lists a limited set of open dinner dates through December.

For a group, book the room before you send the invitations.

What to ask before you book

Three things are almost never on a restaurant’s website: whether you can bring a cake and what cutting it costs, whether a service charge applies at your party size, and how many ways the restaurant will split a check. Ask all three in the same call. What restaurants publish about cake-cutting fees covers the cake questions, and splitting the check at a birthday dinner covers how to settle the bill before anyone orders.
