Birthday Dinner in the West Village: Italian Rooms by Size

The cheat sheetBirthday dinner in the West Village: six Italian restaurants sorted by how many guests each room holds, from 8 to 100, with booking rules from their own sites.

For a birthday dinner in the West Village, the headcount picks the restaurant: Via Carota’s Wine Room holds 8, Rosemary’s West Village communal table 16, Don Angie’s Don’s Next Door 18, Barbuto’s Chefs’ Tables 20 and Palma’s Carriage House Library 22, while L’Artusi takes parties of 10 to 90. Of the ten named spaces that publish a ceiling of 22 guests or fewer, only Palma’s Carriage House Library fits a party of 21 or 22. The capacities, prices and hours below are read from each restaurant’s own website, checked in October 2026.

Which West Village Italian restaurants take a birthday party?

How these six were chosen: each is an Italian restaurant in the West Village whose own site publishes a room capacity or a party-size rule. The table compares those published numbers and is not a ranking.

Restaurant Address Where the party sits Rule to know
Via Carota 51 Grove Street Walk-ins up to 8; a Farm Table and a cellar by inquiry Main dining room: “We do not offer reservations at this time”
Rosemary’s West Village 18 Greenwich Avenue A prix-fixe communal table, 8 to 16 Regular tables book online to 7; 17 or more by inquiry
Don Angie 103 Greenwich Avenue A private room of its own, up to 18 Full-restaurant buyouts up to 50
L’Artusi 228 West 10th Street Wine Room for 14; parties of 10 to 90 Reservations open two weeks ahead, at 9 AM
Palma 28 Cornelia Street Five named spaces, from 10 to 40 guests Courtyard Garden: maximum 40, or 50 with a full buyout
Barbuto 113 Horatio Street Chefs’ Tables for 7 to 20 Reservations open 30 days ahead

How many guests do West Village rooms hold?

The West Village is a neighborhood of small rooms, and the published ceilings show it. Counting each named space on the six event pages at its published maximum, ten stop at 22 guests or fewer. Barbuto’s two Chefs’ Tables count once, and everyday dining-room tables are left out. In order of ceiling:

  • 8: Via Carota’s Wine Room
  • 10: Palma’s Aperitivo at 30 Cornelia Street, mirror side
  • 14: Via Carota’s Farm Table, L’Artusi’s Wine Room and the Aperitivo’s window side
  • 16: Rosemary’s communal table and Palma’s Carriage House Kitchen
  • 18: Don Angie’s Don’s Next Door
  • 20: Barbuto’s Chefs’ Tables
  • 22: Palma’s Carriage House Library

The median ceiling is 15, so a 15th guest rules out five of the ten, a 17th rules out seven and a 21st rules out nine. At the small end, Rosemary’s books regular tables online up to 7 and Barbuto’s Chefs’ Tables start at 7, while L’Artusi’s group range starts at 10 and Via Carota’s Farm Table at 12.

Past 22 the options change kind. Rosemary’s sends 17 or more to inquiry, for wine bar tables holding up to 25 standing guests or a buyout. Palma’s Courtyard Garden has a maximum of 40, Barbuto’s Waxie’s room seats 40, Via Carota’s Spazio Creativo cellar takes 15 to 55, L’Artusi’s mezzanine holds up to 55 for cocktails or a seated event, and its Supper Club at 105 Christopher Street seats 28 or holds 35 standing. Buyouts are published at up to 50 (Don Angie), 90 (L’Artusi) and 100 seated (Rosemary’s West Village and Barbuto).

Which West Village Italian restaurants have private dining?

All six, in different shapes. None of the event pages prints a per-person price; hours and capacities are as of October 2026.

Via Carota: walk in, or write for a room

Via Carota, at 51 Grove Street, answers the special-occasion question in its own words: “We do not offer reservations at this time.” The main dining room seats complete parties first come, first served. Its largest table seats 12, and the page suggests keeping a party to eight or fewer. Waitlist names are taken in person only, parties of three or more may leave a phone number, and waiting guests are offered the bar, with Bar Pisellino across the street. Bigger groups write to gatherings@viacarota.com; the Farm Table and the Spazio Creativo cellar are described in birthday dinner for 15 people in NYC. The restaurant closes at 11pm daily, and corkage is $50.00 per 750ml bottle.

Rosemary’s West Village: a prix-fixe table for 8 to 16

Rosemary’s, at 18 Greenwich Avenue on the corner of West 10th Street, runs its communal table on a seasonal prix-fixe menu. The wine bar tables and the buyout both say “Please inquire for minimums,” while Rosemary’s East Side, a separate location, prints minimums on its own page. Those are not West Village figures. Dinner ends at 10 PM Sunday to Wednesday and 11 PM Thursday to Saturday, and the rooftop garden upstairs looks over Jefferson Market Garden.

Don Angie: 18 seated in a room of its own

Don’s Next Door, next to Don Angie at 103 Greenwich Avenue, seats up to 18; the full restaurant can be bought out for up to 50. The page lists a separate entrance, a cocktail area and a kitchen, and no hours for the room, though the restaurant lists a last seating of 10:30pm nightly. The five pastas in the menu’s Pasta section run from $27 to $29, and La Superlativa’s pasta comparison sets them beside Via Carota’s and L’Artusi’s.

L’Artusi: a wine cellar and the latest close

L’Artusi, at 228 West 10th Street, runs a 110-seat restaurant on two floors. Its Private Wine Room is booked for early seating, late seating or the whole night, with food and beverage minimums and no amount printed; the 40th birthday dinner guide gives the seating times and the rest of its room options. The restaurant closes at 11 PM Sunday to Thursday and at midnight Friday and Saturday, the latest published close of the six. Corkage is $55. The About text counts the walk-in wine cellar at 2500 bottles, while the Private Wine Room text, which gives the 14-guest capacity, says 2,000, so confirm the bottle count before repeating either figure.

Palma: five rooms to choose from

Palma, at 28 Cornelia Street, lists five named spaces, from the Aperitivo’s mirror side at 30 Cornelia Street to the Courtyard Garden, which stretches from 40 to 50 with a full buyout. Its page gives each figure as a maximum without saying seated or standing. The Garden’s retractable roof is closed and the room heated in winter. Dinner is 5 pm to 10 pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday and to 10:30 pm Thursday to Saturday; the hours page lists no Monday service. Inquiries go through a form.

Barbuto: 20 at a family-style table

Barbuto, at 113 Horatio Street at West Street, puts its two Chefs’ Tables between the main dining room and the open kitchen, and the page says they get the restaurant’s family-style menus. Waxie’s, the room below, holds 75 standing for receptions; the full buyout runs to 115 for cocktails. Dinner is 5 pm to 10 pm Monday to Thursday and Sunday, and to 11 pm on Friday and Saturday.

Can you bring a birthday cake to a West Village restaurant?

No event page states an outside-cake rule or fee, though Via Carota’s Spazio Creativo PDF lists custom cakes among extras available on request and its Questions page says it cannot accommodate outside food. None of the six pages mentions a birthday special, package or perk. The closest thing is wording: Rosemary’s calls its communal table ideal for birthdays and its wine bar tables perfect for birthdays. Raise cake and any cutting fee in the first message.

When do West Village birthday tables open?

Two of the six publish a booking clock. L’Artusi opens reservations two weeks out, on a rolling basis each day at 9 AM, and Barbuto says reservations may be made 30 days in advance. Neither window is written for private rooms (Barbuto’s private dining page uses an inquiry button, and L’Artusi’s asks groups to contact the restaurant), so ask whether it applies to a group. The start dates are calculated from those stated windows, not published by the restaurants: counting back from Saturday, December 5, 2026, 30 days gives Thursday, November 5 at Barbuto and two weeks gives Saturday, November 21 at L’Artusi. Via Carota takes no reservations, and Rosemary’s, Palma and Don Angie state no window on the pages checked. How far in advance to book a birthday dinner in NYC covers the clocks at other restaurants.
